Selling a Junk Car? Don’t Get Scammed!

Selling off a junk car is a good way to recoup some of your car’s value now that it’s damaged. However, you need to be careful when you do this, because you could easily get taken if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Before You Sell

First, determine the value of your vehicle. Consult the Kelley Blue Book as a starting point, and take the condition of the car into account. Junk car prices are generally based upon the vehicle’s make model, age, condition (inside and outside), trim, features and mechanical integrity. Also, you should know all the damages to the car, and know where the damage is located. Have as much information about the car’s condition on hand as you possibly can - arming yourself with information is always a good idea. It also shows a buyer that you know what you’re doing, and you’re not willing to be a target.

Navigating the Sale

Next, you should find a reputable dealer. This is important because you want someone who will be fair and honest. Call around to dealers and junkyards in the area, including other cities. Pay attention to how friendly and knowledgeable the customer service representatives are, how fast they say they can get out to you, and what estimate they provide. You may find that you’ll get very different offers, depending on whether or not the car is drivable. Remember that each state has laws, such as lemon laws, that govern the purchase of junk cars; make sure you know what these are and if they apply.

Completing the Deal

During negotiation, you and your buyer will agree on a price based at least in part on how the car will be delivered. If you can drive or tow it in yourself, do so. This saves you money in the end. You then turn the license plates over to the buyer, as well as the registration and title, and may fill out damage disclosure paperwork (either as a form on the back of the title, or as a separate item). Make sure you get the payment before you’ve signed the car over. Collect a bill of sale and receipt, and don’t forget to cancel your registration with the state. Also, make sure your car is removed from property tax records so you don’t continue to pay for it.

Selling a junk car can be easier than trying to sell a fully-functioning one, but you still need to protect yourself as much as possible. Pay attention to these details, and you’ll be armed with the knowledge you need.

Are you helping the Environment when you Junk Your Car?

We know that junking your car will help you score some extra cash, but will it help out the environment? Is your car better off sitting in your driveway or backyard collecting dust or is it economically better to send that vehicle to the junk yard?

Studies show that 85 percent of the material in junk cars can be recycled. Recycling your junk car will serve as used parts for other cars. It will help save money, natural resources and energy. Not junking your vehicle or leaving it to rot in the driveway or backyard can be wasteful. The car will start to corrode and decay which can be harmful to the environment when it is not done in the right environment according to local and state environmental laws.

While keeping your junk car and watching it corrode can be wasteful, recycling your junk car can protect the environment. All vehicles contain gas, oil, antifreeze, refrigerants, lead, mercury, and other contaminants that can be harmful if they contaminate our drinking water supply, air, and soil. When you recycle your junk car the right way, the salvage yard will remove the contaminants and dispose of things properly so that the environment is protected and pollution free.

When choosing to recycle your vehicle, make sure that it is being recycled to a salvage yard that meets environmentally-friendly best practices. Ask about the process they use to ensure the vehicle’s contaminants are removed and disposed of properly so that the environment is safe. It is important to be knowledgeable when you are junking your car instead of sending it off to a junkyard that may do more harm there than it did in your backyard. Make sure they are licensed by the local municipality and is complying with the state environmental requirements.

5 surprising Junkyard finds

While browsing through the selection at your local junkyard you might not think you would normally find these items. They can be found however, if you look hard enough.

Gearheads have known for years that within each junkyard are untold treasures including classic car parts, motors and a little bit of automotive history.

Stopping by a junkyard near you can mean salvaging an entire motor or grille. So grab a wheelbarrow and head down to your local salvage yard, you might be surprised what you can find. Here are 5 things you could find at your local salvage yard.

Police cars

Finding a police car buried in a junkyard can be quite exciting. Retired police vehicles normally face the public auction block in cities across the USA but can often end up in junkyards. The interesting thing about many of these vehicles is that they are typically in relatively good shape. It’s not uncommon to find a Crown Victoria Police Interceptor or “Crown Vic” in a salvage yard with little damage to it. Police Cars have many useful parts for repairs or just decoration.

Stolen Cars

You might think that Stolen cars are too “hot” for you to get a hold of in a junk yard but often times these cars have been stolen and left there. Typically these cars are in perfectly fine condition and were simply attached to tow trucks and hauled away by criminals looking to make fast cash. But how many of these cars get scrapped vs. being resold? That depends on if sellers have proof of ownership to sell Junk cars and what the car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) says about the car or truck.

Fire Trucks and Buses

An MTA bus in New York city has a life span of 12-15 years and they end their public duty by being sold for scrap metal. Before they are sliced into pieces, you might find one laying around your local scrap yard. The same fate usually affects school buses although many times old school buses are reused for personal transport. Fire Trucks can also be found at scrap yards although many are purchased by collectors. Some Fire Trucks can still be found at salvage yards before they are sold off in parts or scrapped.

Military Vehicles

Looking for a giant Tank? Maybe a Humvee? These vehicles can sometimes be found in a salvage yard. Sometimes when a private collection changes hands, certain vehicles make their way into a junk yard. From Russian reconnaissance trucks to Czech and British Tanks, you can find it all in your local Junk yard.

Classic Cars and Trucks

You’ve heard the stories about people that find that classic car buried in the junk yard. Maybe it’s a 1969 Dodge Charger, or a classic Ford F-100 but you never know what you might find inside your local salvage yard. Junk yards are notorious as places for finding the stuff of legends. One man’s trash is truly another man’s treasure. These stories truly gain steam in places like car magazines and online forums where people talk about finding real cars in their local yards. It may seem like an urban legend but great junk yard finds do exist. Visit your local salvage yard today to see if you can strike gold!

Environmental Laws Governing Junk Yards in Georgia

Though the idea of junk yards may seem like a thing of the past, they're alive and well thanks to the amount of materials America goes through each year.

Though every community is different, states such as Georgia have their own laws that pertain to what you can and can't have in a junk yard, particularly with an eye towards environmental issues.

While the state has its own laws, there are also local laws to be considered. Either way, if you are considering owning, buying or starting a junk yard in the state of Georgia, it's important to know what laws apply before you do.

Zoning Laws

While there are state laws to consider, there are also local zoning ordinances that you will need to adhere to. This may concern certain heights of what you can keep on your yard, as well as any environmental concerns for the city. For example, you may need to be aware of the kind of junk you are allowed to keep based on where you are located, such as agricultural, residential, commercial and industrial waste.

Specific Laws, Specific Types of Junk

Though many junk yards separate out their junk so it's easily accessible for those who want to come and look at it, there are specific laws that pertain to keeping it. For example, a junk yard in the state of Georgia may not have more than 500 scrap tires in the yard at any one time. Additionally, if the junk yard is salvaging precious metals, they must be declared and accounted for in their taxes at the end of the tax year. There are many laws that apply to junk yards, so it's important that you work with your local ordinance enforcement agency to ensure you're keeping within the legal limits of the law.

Know Your Sources

If you are an auto mechanic or someone who is looking for a good deal on car parts, it's important that you go to a reputable junk yard to get your parts. Look on the internet and check with the Better Business Bureau before doing business with a junk dealer you don't know. While most junk yard dealers are extremely professional, some do participate in purchasing stolen merchandise, which can lead to extra headaches for you in the long run. One of the easiest ways to find a good dealer is to simply ask a trusted auto mechanic, who will more than likely already have an established relationship with a yard.

How Do I get a Replacement Car Title in Georgia?

Your car title is important. Not only does it show ownership of your vehicle, but it's also essential should you ever wish to junk your car, sell your car, or apply for a car title loan.

While you may have tried to be careful with this important piece of documentation, accidents do happen.

From moving to simply misplacing it, there may come a time where you need to get a replacement car title for your original one. Though many things concerning the Department of Motor Vehicles can be time consuming and frustrating, getting a new car title issued is actually a fairly easy process.

1) Complete Form MV-1

The first thing you'll need to do is to complete the MV-1 Title Tag Application form. As this is a replacement, there will be a small fee associated with getting your title reissued. If you are looking for a replacement because you never actually received your car title in the mail, you will also need to fill in an Affidavit of a Georgia Certificate of Title Lost in the Mail and attach it to your application. Be aware that this is only doable if it's less than 60 days after your original application.

2) Head To Your Local Tax Commissioner's Office

Once you have your form in hand, you'll need to go to your local Tax Commissioner's Office to complete the application. Remember, everyone who is listed on the original title will have to appear. If you have people who are unable to appear, you will need to get a Power of Attorney form before you go.

3) Bring Your Documents

In order to finalize your application, you will need to show several items to get your replacement title issued. Firstly, you will need to show your currently Georgia driver's license. The current odometer reading for the vehicle is also essential. Some recommend taking a photo with your phone for proof in addition to writing it down. Lastly, you will need to show proof of insurance for the vehicle and the drivers listed on the title.

While it may seem like a hassle, getting a replacement car title in Georgia is actually a fairly easy process if you have all of your documents ready and together. Once you've received your new title, be sure to file it away in a safe place. You'll need it should you wish to junk your vehicle or apply for a title loan in the future.

Ways to tell you need to junk your car

Junking your car can be a traumatic, yet exciting experience. It can be traumatic for you if your junk car is the apple of your eye, but it can also be exciting because of the cash you get when you junk it.

The cash will give you the opportunity to purchase a better car that can last for years to come. So how can you tell if you need to junk the car in your driveway that hasn’t moved in 6 months or the car you are currently driving around? Here are 4 ways to tell you need to junk your car:

It isn’t drivable

If you have a car in your driveway or backyard that hasn’t moved in 6 months to a couple of years, then it may be time to junk that vehicle. Most cars that have been sitting idle for that long period of time will start to have underlying problems that will make it harder to get the car started and working properly.

Costly Repair

If your car is in need of a costly repair that costs more than the car is worth, then it may be time to junk that vehicle. Costly repairs like a new transmission or a new engine on a car that has a low Kelly Blue Book value will not improve the value of the car, it will just make the car drivable for a few more years. It makes more sense to put that money towards a new car, along with the cash you get for junking your car than repairing an old vehicle with little to no value.

Tons of Cosmetic Damage

If your car has tons of cosmetic damage that will cause the car to run improperly, overheat, or impossible to drive; then it may be time to junk your car. Yes, cosmetic damage is only on the exterior of the car, but sometimes excessive cosmetic damage can make internal problems with the car and cause a lot of problems down the road for you long term.

Transmission Go Out? Sell that Junk Car for Cash

It's a sad fact of life -- car repairs are expensive. While most of the time it makes good financial sense to repair a car rather than buy a new or used car to replace it, there are some repairs that are expensive enough that it may worth considering other options than repair.

One of the most expensive repairs most car owners will see in the lifetime of their automobile is the need for a new transmission. Although some repairs you can put off until you have the cash to complete them, a dead transmission essentially equals a dead car.

What does a transmission do?

If oil is the "blood" in your car, then think of your transmission as your car's heart. Your transmission converts speed and torques along the drivetrain, powering the wheels and making your car go. A working transmission should maximize the efficiency of how your engine works. It should help your car have low fuel consumption and work at its very best. When your transmission goes out, you car is dead on the road until it's either repaired or replaced.

How much does a repair or replacement cost?

Your transmission is one of the most complex elements in your car, and therefore getting your transmission issues solved can be extremely expensive. The cost can also depend on what kind of car you have and if it's automatic or manual. Rebuilding or repairing a transmission can cost anywhere from $1,000-$1,500. However, replacing a transmission, which may be necessary depending on the damage, is one of the most expensive car costs going. This can run anywhere from $1,500-$3,500.

Are there any other options?

If your repair or replacement transmission is actually more than your car is worth, it might be time to consider letting your automobile go to that great parking lot in the sky. One of the ways you can do this is to sell your car to a junk specialist for cold, hard cash. There are lots of elements that can be recycled on your car that are worth money, particularly your catalytic converter and other essential parts. This could be extremely helpful in buying a replacement car that's in a little better shape.

If you find yourself with a dead transmission, then be sure you know all of your options. Repairs and replacements can oftentimes be more expensive than most people can fork out. If that's the case, then speak to your local junk car buyer to find out rates. You might be surprised with what you find out.

Car Options after an Automobile Wreck

It happens to most of us: you’re involved in a fender bender. Though a sad reality, nearly every driver at some point in their time behind the wheel will find themselves faced with either a minor ding or a major collision. Now what? Depending on how severe the damage is, you are left with several different options for dealing with your wounded automobile. While minor damage can easily be ironed out at your local auto body shop, major collisions may require you to simply sell the car to a junk buyer and move on to your next ride. When dealing with a post-accident nightmare, there are several options you can take.

Living With The Damage

While your insurance may take care of most of your issues, you may decide against claiming if you have a larger deductible or if your no-claims bonus is worth keeping. For minor damage, the idea of just living with it becomes more appealing. However, it’s important to remember that failing to handle even the most minor of dings can lead to rust and scratches becoming a problem in the future.

Getting Your Car Fixed In An Auto Body Shop

If you’re not the person at fault in a wreck or your car is virtually undrivable thanks to the damage, you may want to opt for taking it to an auto body shop to get repaired. Look for a local auto body shop that has great references, or one you’ve used and trusted in the past. It’s also important to remember to get a couple of quotes before you commit to having the service done, as prices can vary greatly between shops.

Junking The Car

When all else fails and the repairs are actually going to cost you more than the car is worth, it might be time to let it go to the great garage in the sky. However, even the oldest cars are worth money for both scrap metal and parts, despite the damage. Take the time to get a quote from your local junk car buyer to see if it’s worthwhile junking your car after an accident. You might be pleasantly surprised at how much catalytic converters and other parts from your car are worth.

Though a car wreck can feel like the end of the world, there’s no point in getting bent out of shape about it. With the options above available to you, there’s sure to be one that fits the extent of damage you have to deal with. Take the time to learn the facts and get quotes to help you make the best decision possible.

Why are Catalytic Converters so Valuable on Junk Cars?

When your car decides to take a trip to that great junkyard in the sky, you may be surprised to know that it's still worth some money. The junk car market is getting more valuable than ever, and one of the main reasons is through your vehicle's catalytic converter. Catalytic converters are actually so valuable that thieves will even target cars in parking lots to remove their catalytic converter, rather than just stealing the car. Before you think of junking that old car, take a look into just why the catalytic converter can be so valuable.

The Hunt for Precious Metals

You may not know it, but the actual catalyst in your catalytic converter is actually usually made from a precious metal. This is because metals such as platinum have been proven to be the best catalytic agent. Platinum prices are sky high in most markets, with an average of $1,500 per ounce. Given platinum's many uses throughout a numerous amount of marketplaces, such as the auto or jewelry markets, it's little wonder it's in such high demand. Additionally, platinum can be melted down and used over and over again while retaining its value, unlike other metals.

Recycling Your Catalytic Converter

While recycling your junk car may sound like the most "green" thing to do, it can also be very profitable. Before you approach a scrap metal yard or look to sell your vehicle on, take the time to research what you may have on your hands and what it may be worth. Going in armed with the most information will make it easier for you to negotiate a good price, particularly if your older vehicle typically has a platinum catalytic converter as its standard gear.

You've probably seen commercials or heard the phrase, "that old car is worth money." By understanding about the make up of your catalytic converter, it's easy to see why. Research your car before selling it on, or ask for an appraisal from a trusted car mechanic. You'll be glad you did when that money hits your pocket.

Top 5 American Cars With The Worst Track Record

While American cars certainly have a reputation for being well-built and highly reliable for the most part,
Consumer Reports recently released their Best & Worst Car Values list for 2014 and several American cars ranked extremely poorly. Their factors were worst combination of performance, utility, and reliability for the money, considering all owner costs over a five-year period.

Cadillac XTS Premium

Though firmly in the minds of luxury car shoppers as one of the nation’s best, the Cadillac XTS Premium was the worst scoring of the American cars in this department. Common complaints were poor overall performance, a shaky ride on acceleration and lack of driver vision due to the high rear deck. Additionally, the infotainment system was considered clunky, and the 5-year owner repair cost was estimated at $57,000.

Lincoln MKX

Though nice to look at, the Lincoln was judged overall as “unimpressive” by Consumer Reports. Another common complaint was an unrefined transmission, lackluster and poor quality interior and reliability standards that fell well below average. The onboard infotainment system was also said to be extremely distracting and difficult to use, making it an accident-prone ride.

Ford Explorer XLT

This large, roomy SUV might be popular, but it’s difficult to see why after reading the reports. Handling was found to be secure, though not particularly agile, which one would expect from a car in this price range. Additionally, reliability was thought to be well below average, making it one of the least-recommended cars by the magazine.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

Though perfect for off-roading, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara’s on-road performance puts it on shaky ground. Experts found the ride to be jiggly, the handling awkward and the actual seats to be extremely uncomfortable, making it poor for long-distances. Jeep’s 5-year owner costs were also extremely high, clocking in at over $50,000.

Ford F-250 Lariat

Those looking for a heavy-duty pick up truck may want to look elsewhere, as the handling on this particular vehicle was found to be poor all around. The Ford F-250 Lariat also boasts incredibly bad gas mileage, and the high floor makes the simple act of getting in or out of the car difficult. This truck was also found to have one of the lowest emergency-handling scores in the nation.

When it comes to buying a car, you want something that you can rely on to perform for years to come. Nobody wants to have regular or expensive repairs, terrible gas mileage or a high cost of ownership. You also don't want to have to junk your vehicle 5 or 10 years down the line.

3 Things To Look for When Purchasing Used Parts for Your Car

It can get expensive purchasing brand new parts for your used vehicle. While doing major car repairs, sometimes purchasing brand new parts for an older car isn't worth the trouble. By purchasing used and aftermarket parts for your car, you can save a ton of time and money. Cosmetic items such as bumpers, hoods, steering wheel columns, and wheels are the most commonly used parts from junk cars that will be reliable and keep your car up to par.

At some junk yards you should be prepared to remove the part yourself. Since these junk yards are selling auto parts for low prices, you have to come prepared with your own tools and extra people if needed, to life the heavy used part and get it into your vehicle. How do you make sure that you are choosing quality used parts and ensure that you are getting a good return on your investment? Here are 3 things to look for while shopping for used car parts:

  • Never buy used safety parts- There are a ton of parts that are safe to buy used, but safety parts are not included in this list. You shouldn't purchase air bags, seat belts, parts for your braking system, or electronic sensors that alert you when or if things go wrong with your car. These things may not function properly and in the need of an emergency, you would rather be safe than sorry.

  • Check for a warranty or a return policy- Some junkyard or salvage places offer up to a 1 year warranty or at least a return policy if the used part you purchased doesn't work or fit on your car. This is especially important in case you purchase a used part that isn't cheap and you can’t benefit from it. It helps if you can exchange it for something different or return it for a refund. Some salvage auto shops and junk car buyers, don’t allow terms or conditions and may tell you when you purchase the used part, that all sales are final.

  • Make sure it meets OEM specifications- Make sure that the used part that you have purchased meets original equipment manufacturer specifications. This is important because this means you would be getting a quality part that most dealers or auto mechanics would use to repair your vehicle.

Do you have any tips to add? We want to know!

Best Junkyards to Scavenge in the US

While most people see junkyards as a place where all things undesirable are left to rot and rust, the same cannot be said for a lot of people. Many car enthusiasts and spare parts seekers view junkyards as sacred and holy ground, a nook that offers a lot of possibilities for good and valuable finds.

In the United States, there are hundreds of junkyards strewn across the lands, serving as the graveyard for tons of automobiles that are way past their prime. But some junkyards do hold a number of automotive treasures that range from classic car frames to turbochargers to intact engines, things that will make any car aficionado salivate.

The following junkyards have been deemed as the best yards to scavenge for car parts. You might want to try these places out and see what these junkyards may have in store for you.
  1. Corvair Ranch. This has been the go to place for people who are looking for collectible items and rare cars. Located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Corvair Ranch holds more than 600 cars.
  2. Arizona Desert. With no homeowner associations to hound you, you can easily take your time as you browse through the rows and stacks of abandoned cars and thoroughly dissect them for parts and scrap metal. The junkyard is nestled between Kingman, AZ and the mighty Hoover Dam.
  3. Desert Valley Auto Parts. Still located in Arizona, this holy land of abandoned cars and scrap metal parts attracts hordes of car collectors and restorers in search for their next masterpiece.
Other junkyards in other countries worth checking out:
  1. Historische Autofriedhof, Switzerland This junkyard boasts of the largest collection of scrap European cars. The keyword here is that most abandoned autos in this spot in the planet are classic models.
  2. Scrapheap Challenge, United Kingdom. Junkyards are great places to look for that supercharger you desperately need. But what can be more fun than actually building a fully functional car out from scrap? In the UK, junkyard addicts pit themselves against each other in a race for junkyard fame.
